Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon Napa 1998
Release Day: Saturday, February 1, 2003 Vintage: 1998 Appellation: Napa Valley Composition: 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot Vintage Description: In 1998 it really paid to know our vineyards. The weather was more erratic than usual, swinging between extremes of rain, and cold, but we were able to make excellent wine by relying on years of experience with our vineyards' responses to various conditions. We know that if we made the right adjustments to the vines during the growing season, and waited patiently to give each vineyard the time it needed to produce fully mature fruit, we would have another great vintage. The harvest of 1998 was one of the latest ever for Silver Oak, because a cool spring delayed bloom by about a month, and then ripening was slow through the hot summer. On some days during July and August, the temperatures rose so high that the grapes temporarily stalled, that is, they stopped photosynthesis in order to prevent dehydration. Toward the end of September, the weather improved dramatically. For four straight weeks, we had mild, sunny days with near-perfect ripening conditions. During that time, we were able to judiciously evaluate the progress in each of our vineyards and wait for optimal ripeness-that critical moment when the flavors of the grapes reach their maturity just as the sugars rise to the levels we like. Our harvest in Napa Valley concluded on October 27. This was a vintage when Mother Nature tested us a bit. We feel that we have risen to the challenge and produced elegant, rich wines with smooth, fully developed characters. Winemaking: The 1998 wines were fermented in stainless steel tanks at maximum temperatures of 86 degrees. Malolactic fermentations were conducted in tanks. Blends were made and the wine was barreled down in early 1999. The Napa Valley was aged 24 months in barrel, and then cellared another eighteen months in bottle before release. Tasting Notes: The 1998 Napa Valley is a blend of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot. It displays a dark ruby color and a complex nose of cassis, coffee, cocoa, and allspice. It is rich and full on the palate with a long, fruit-filled finish. This intense wine will continue to improve until 2013 given proper cellaring.
